Google, AT&T and a host of online education organizations are forming an alliance to develop standards for career readiness. Spearheaded by Massively Open Online Course (MOOC) provider, Udacity, the Open Education Alliance will explore standards for how to prepare and evaluate graduates. The still-forming group of technology companies will help online education providers develop courses, tests, and certifications meant to supplement the use of a college degree in the hiring process.

Believe it or not, a poor site architecture can completely kill off rankings, traffic and even conversions. The reasons for this are many. First, if there’s no way for a search engine to access much of the content of a site because the only way to reach the “meat” is through search forms that need to be submitted, search engines won’t find or index most of it.

Crunched for tech-savy couples

There’s a growing market for mobile apps designed to help couples stay closer. The phenomenon first came to my attention with the launch of Pair at Y Combinator’s most recent demo day. But since then, I’ve seen a whole bunch of new apps popping up, all seeking to offer up a tight little social network for two. The latest such app to launch is Avocado, which was created by a couple of former Googlers looking for a way to get closer and better organize their life together. It allows couples to create to-do lists and cross items off, upload pictures to share with one another, and send private messages to each other. It also lets users create and send “quick notes” to one another, over and over again, as well as “quick faces,” which swap out common emoticons for unique facial expressions of each partner.

Crunched for those interested in Social Media

Every developer wants Facebook referral traffic, but not all apps have actions that fit well with auto-sharing, and others might not want to post to Facebook without their users’ express permission. So today Facebook launches a Like action for mobile and web apps. Don’t call it a “Like Button” though, as instead of immediately being one-click, the new Like Action requires a user to give publishing permission to an app first. The Like Action will also generate activity Facebook can turn into Sponsored Stories, the center of its mobile monetization plan.

Customer Notification: HURRICANE IRENE

As you may know, Hurricane Irene, the first Hurricane to threaten the North East in quite a few years, is currently projected to produce 100 mph winds in New Jersey, and New York at some point this weekend. Irene has the potential to be a serious and multi-hazard threat for the major metropolitan areas of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. This hurricane has the potential to produce flooding rains, high winds, downed trees (on houses, cars, power lines) and widespread power outages.

“Reinvent NYC.Gov,” a contest to fully re-design NYC’s Web presence.

Involving the community in New York City’s website redesign was a part of NYC’s “Road Map for the Digital City,” a strategy review published by Bloomberg’s office in May. In interviews with citizens for the strategy paper, city officials discovered some residents felt the website should be more intuitive and easier to navigate.
